On September 7, 2001, Jack was visited at work by Jur Botter, Project Manager, Social Policy Department, Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, of the Netherlands. Jur (pronounced with a silent "J", like "yur") was interested in the 1996 reform of the welfare program in the U.S. After talking him almost into a stupor, Jack left Jur to continue on to 6 other cities around the US, including New York City. Needless to say, Jur was unable to complete his Social Policy odyssey, part of a Masters in Public Administration program in the Netherlands, due to the horrific attack on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon September 11. On September 20, Alexandria held a candlelight memorial service to honor the victims and families. Jur, and a colleague, Petra van den Broek, accepted an invitation to accompany Jack, Janet & Daniel to the service at City Hall. We were very pleased to share our sorrow and grief with newly found friends . . . .
