Daniel went to FONZ Nature Camp in the Shenandoah Valley again this year - this time for two weeks! He loved the cards and notes from family and friends, and he promises to write thank yous . . . eventually. (;-D We went up to a lodge on the Skyline Drive the Friday before we had to pick him up on Saturday, so we had a relaxing time in the mountains, too. Then, we all went to the town of New Market, where in 1864, the Battle of New Market took place. A small confederate force saved the Shenandoah Valley with a corps of VMI cadets on the "Field of Lost Shoes."

Here's a digital panamora of the stained glass window commemorating the battle.
The dioramas portraying the battle were well done.
A painting showing the VMI cadets charge.
The battlefield today. The farm on Bushong's hill was the scene of the "Field of the Lost Shoes," where the cadets charged through the mud, lost their shoes in the process, but won the skirmish.
Janet and Daniel view a model of the battlefield, with Bushong's Hill behind them.
The museum had many good displays from the war years.
One of the cadets.
Maybe his partner took this photograph of Matthew Brady.
Jack & Janet took a hike on the Skyline Drive.
The scenery was spectacular!
We were told that these marks were made by a bear. See the two sets of claw marks on the right picture?
